Gunnison Valley Schools closed Monday for the first time since 1970 because of the extreme amount of snow that is continuing to accumulate.

Western State Colorado University in Gunnison also closed its doors.

Roughly 6 feet of snow have fallen in the past seven days in Crested Butte. And another 30 inches of snow could fall by Thursday morning.

The Crested Butte ski resort closed early on Monday out of concern for guests and employees.

“Wet and heavy snowfall combined with increasing winds has led to the closure,” officials said on Twitter.

On Monday when the schools and ski area closed, this 92 year old woman used her walker to get through the snow covered sidewalk and made it to her dental appointment on time!

Incredible!! I remember it snowing like that when I lived in Gunnison. I worked at Crested Butte ski school and sometimes we couldn't even ski down the bunny hill there was so much snow!!! I lived there 91-97.

It's something when a ski resort has to close because of to much snow.

My daughter and son-in-law live in Parker which is not too far away from Denver. Ive been there in winter-time and experienced heavy snow fall. The council are quickly out to start snow clearance whilst householders are expected to clear the sidewalks outside their homes

Who else had home-built 'studded' mountain bike tires while living in Gunnison? Hubby (Randy Nettell) did. Add an inner tube, and 'stud' the tires with short drywall screws from the inside out.

Yep. That's the neighborhood. This is why an "old Crested Butte house" has that second floor entrance door. It's the "winter door" for when the snow shows up and stays.

I went to school in Gunnison for a year; there was so much snow piled up in the middle of the main street , you couldn't see the other side.
