This is what Central City looked like before the gambling casinos

The City of Central, commonly known as Central City, is the Home Rule Municipality in Gilpin and Clear Creek counties. The city is a historic mining settlement founded in 1859 during the Pike’s Peak Gold Rush and came to be known as the “Richest Square Mile on Earth”. Central City and the adjacent city of Black Hawk form the federally designated Central City/Black Hawk Historic District.

My kids loved going there before gambling was legalized. We always had such fun wandering around exploring the shops.

I really wish I could read one of these articles without one of those damn ads for those stupid shirts popping up.

I was there a lot as a child. My grandmother's best friend owned a gold mine and had tours daily. It was a beautiful little town. My Dad would never go back up after gambling was approved.

Way more fun too. It's virtually a ghost town now. All the people go to Blackhawk

I remember this view. I couldn't find it this summer when I drove through there. Also too much traffic. I did go to the graveyards beyond though. Still very interesting.

I loved the view from up there! Of course Mary had to stop in the side of the road coming down the mountain and scared Mom. She was fussing at Mary and your Mom, Mary, and I was laughing. One of my favorite memories!

A much better place in those days than today. People can't even imagine what it could have been. Wouldn't have been the economic boon to the State the gambling is, but it would have been a very rich and historic cultural center for COlorado. Too bad really.

i used to go there all the time. Hung out with the face on the bar room floor. Have never been to the town once the casinos went up.

We used to go there every summer when I was growing up. I remember the Gilded Garter too! If someone had to use the restroom, they would stop playing music and hand you a roll of T.P. as you walked by the stage. I have not been back since it turned into a casino town. I want to remember it as I knew it.
