Dj Casper, the whisperer of creating iconic dance songs, has passed away from cancer.

In an interview with ABC7 News in Chicago, Casper’s wife, Kim, told the outlet he had liver cancer since 2016 and died on August 7.

The “Cha Cha Slide” broke dance floors in the early 2000s and has become a community staple in almost every country. You could count on your event DJ having the “Cha Cha Slide” in rotation from school dances, family gatherings, weddings, and more.

“When I first did it, I did it as an aerobic exercise for my nephew at Bally’s,” Casper said to ABC7 in his final interview. “From there, it just took off. Elroy Smith from WGCI grabbed ahold of it,” he continued.

Casper went on to discuss he was diagnosed with two types of cancer, renal and Neuroendocrine, which are of the kidney and liver.

“I used to weigh 236 pounds, and I think I’m about 60 pounds less,” Casper said. “If you know me, you know I’m not going to stop. I’m going to continue to go. I’m going to continue to go until I can’t go.”

As we remember the “Cha Cha Slide” and the impact DJ Casper had on changing a generation of music, he left his final interview with encouraging words—despite what we were going through.

“Anybody that’s going through cancer know that you have cancer and cancer does not have you,” Casper said. “So, keep on doing the ‘Cha Cha Slide.'”
