The Return to Nature Funeral Home is under investigation after 115 bodies were found improperly stored.

“This is going to be a very, very lengthy process,” Fremont County Coroner Randy Keller said at a news conference Friday per CNN. “With the number of decedents we have in this facility and the identification process that needs to be completed, this could take several months.”

The coroner’s office was contacted by the Fremont County sheriff on a report of an odor coming from the funeral home, which led to the start of the investigation. Once a warrant was issued, authorities quickly discovered that the foul odor was due to improperly stored bodies, making the funeral home a hazardous scene.

“Due to the magnitude of this situation, the FCSO requested assistance from the Coloraod Burea of Investigation and the Federal Bureau of Investigation,” says KRDO.

According to Return to Nature Funeral Home’s website, the funeral home offers “green burials” without embalming fluid in a biodegradable casket or “nothing at all.”
