According to the Pew Research Center, a middle-income household in Denver in 2023 would have an annual income between $54,700 and $163,000. This is based on the Pew definition of middle class as households with incomes that are two-thirds to double the national median income.

The national median income for a household of four in 2023 is $71,000. So, a middle-income household of four in Denver would have an annual income between $52,118 and $156,354.

“A related analysis examines the impact of the coronavirus pandemic on the financial well-being of households in the lower-, middle- and upper-income tiers, with comparisons to the Great Recession era,” says the study.

Of course, what it means to be “middle class” can vary depending on individual circumstances and lifestyle choices. For example, a family with two young children may need a higher income than a single person to maintain a similar standard of living.

Household requirements to be considered middle class are:

1 person: $29,500 – $88,100

2 people:  $42,025 – $126,075

3 people: $52,118 – $156,354

4 people: $59,000 – $176,000

It is important to note that these are just general guidelines. There is no one-size-fits-all definition of middle class.
