In a unanimous vote on Monday, Denver City Council approved a plan to lease the Radisson Hotel in Globeville, adding 220 rooms to the city’s growing network of non-congregate shelters.

This latest move furthers Mayor Mike Johnston’s ambitious initiative to house 1,000 individuals experiencing homelessness by year’s end.

Following a previous arrangement utilizing a portion of the Radisson’s rooms, the city will now lease the entire building through December 2024. This expansion is expected to accommodate around 250 people at any given time, offering temporary refuge and critical support services.

“These additional beds are crucial to addressing our city’s homelessness crisis,” Mayor Johnston stated. “Every person deserves a safe haven, and we’re committed to bringing everyone indoors, especially during the cold winter months.”

The city also approved a $2 million contract with Bayaud Enterprises Inc. to manage meal services, support programs, and day-to-day operations at the Radisson. Additionally, a $3.1 million contract with the Saint Francis Center secured continued operations at the Comfort Inn, another key shelter site hosting 136 units in District 8.

Thursday at 6 p.m. at Johnson Recreation Center at 4809 Race St., the city is hosting a community information about the hotel. Those who can’t attend can join online.
