While Denver has long held the spotlight as Colorado’s urban heart, recent insights from U-Haul suggest a compelling trend: newcomers are increasingly embracing the state’s diverse landscapes and communities beyond the capital city. From vibrant university towns to picturesque mountain retreats, Colorado’s allure extends far and wide.

Drawing upon over 2 million one-way truck transactions in 2023, U-Haul’s Growth Index positions Colorado among the top-growing states for inbound moves. And while Denver remains a popular destination, a closer look unveils a captivating shift towards smaller cities and mountain towns.

Fort Collins, Colorado, is becoming a hot spot destination for newcomers, along with Loveland, Boulder, Montrose, Parker, Steamboat Springs, Pagosa Springs, Silverthorne, Brighton, and Gunnison.

Here are the top 10 states people moved to in 2023:

  1. Texas
  2. Florida
  3. North Carolina
  4. South Carolina
  5. Tennessee
  6. Idaho
  7. Washington
  8. Arizona
  9. Colorado
  10. Virginia

“Around the Denver metro area, there are loads of new condos and apartment buildings being constructed,” Adam Walker, U-Haul Company of North Western Colorado president, said in an email. “Employment is a major factor. There are many businesses headquartered in and around Denver that all seem to be recruiting.”
