Denver’s culinary scene is a vibrant one, constantly welcoming new tastes and trends. But amidst the excitement, sometimes we have to say goodbye to old favorites. In 2023, several iconic restaurants closed their doors, leaving memories that linger long after their last bites.
El Tepehuan Mexican Restaurant: After 45 years as a green chile legend, “El Tep” served its final plate on December 31st. Owner Graciela Corral’s Englewood haven had earned a loyal following for its authentic flavors and warm atmosphere.
3 Kilts Tavern: This Capitol Hill mainstay shut down in September after just two years. Despite lively celebrations and diverse entertainment, rising costs and a quieter post-pandemic landscape took their toll.
Coffee at the Point: Five Points lost a vital piece of its history when Coffee at the Point closed its doors after 13 years. A legal battle with the landlord forced owner Ryan Cobbins to shutter the second-longest-running business in the neighborhood.
Tom’s Starlight: The reinvention of Tom’s Diner only lasted a year before the mid-century-style cocktail lounge closed in November. Co-owner Tom Messina’s retirement marked the end of an era for the East Colfax institution.
Pizzeria Locale: The Neapolitan pizza empire, with five Denver locations, folded entirely in July. Founded by Bobby Stuckey and Lachlan Mackinnon-Patterson, the chain faced challenges despite its initial success. Interestingly, the original Boulder location lives on as Pizzeria Alberico.
