Say Goodbye to Long Lines: DIA’s Cutting-Edge Security Tech Speeds Up Screening

Denver International Airport (DIA) is on track to speed up security screening sooner than anticipated, thanks to an accelerated construction schedule for its new east security checkpoint. This project is part of the airport’s broader efforts to enhance passenger experience and accommodate growing traveler numbers.

The new east checkpoint is designed to complement the west checkpoint, which opened earlier this year. Both checkpoints are part of DIA’s strategy to handle the record-breaking passenger traffic the airport has experienced in 2024. With passenger numbers consistently hitting new highs every month, DIA expects to surpass last year’s totals by nearly 4 million travelers.

The east checkpoint, now halfway through construction, mirrors the west checkpoint in design and functionality. Each will feature 17 state-of-the-art security lanes equipped with advanced technology aimed at streamlining the screening process. These lanes allow multiple passengers to load their items simultaneously, use larger bins, and incorporate computed tomography (CT) X-ray scanners. These scanners produce 3D images, enabling passengers to leave travel-size liquids and electronics in their carry-on bags.

In addition to being ahead of schedule, the project is also under budget, a significant achievement for such a large-scale infrastructure effort. The new checkpoints are part of DIA’s larger goal to support 100 million passengers by 2027. This includes closing older security checkpoints on the north side and reallocating space in the main terminal for concessions and meet-and-greet areas as part of the ongoing Great Hall project.

DIA’s leadership is optimistic about the impact of these improvements. “Six months into the West Checkpoint being open, we can say with confidence that we have improved the passenger experience and made our security operations safer and more efficient,” said DIA CEO Phil Washington. “The completion of the East Security Checkpoint will further enhance our security screening process and improve the passenger journey.”

As DIA continues to break passenger records, these upgrades are crucial in ensuring that the airport can efficiently manage the increasing volume of travelers while maintaining a high standard of security and convenience.
