Hiker Discovers Mountain Lion Lurking Under Vehicle After Returning from Hike

A video that recently surfaced online is going viral, showing a hiker returning from a trail to an unexpected surprise—a mountain lion seeking shade beneath the rear bumper of their vehicle.

The clip serves as a crucial reminder that, just like people, animals also seek relief from the heat. It’s important to always check under your vehicle or in truck beds before getting in, especially after leaving your car in nature for an extended period.

In Colorado’s high-elevation areas, marmots and mountain goats are also something to keep an eye out for. Marmots are often attracted to vehicles because of engine smells and fluids, while mountain goats are drawn to salt residue left on cars.

If you find an animal lurking near your vehicle—whether it’s a mountain lion or another creature—there are a few ways to safely handle the situation. Using the horn when you lock your car can be enough to startle the animal away. Whistles or tossing small pebbles near the animal can also help. If the animal doesn’t move, keep a safe distance and allow it time to leave. For stubborn situations, contacting local wildlife authorities is recommended.
