Longtime Emmy-Winning Denver TV News Anchor Has Died

Who would you include on the Mount Rushmore of Denver TV news anchors in your lifetime – whether still living or not? To be clear, I’m specifically talking about anchors and not meteorologists or sports reporters, because that would be way, way too many faces carved into a mountain. So no Mike Nelson. No Ron Zappolo. No Les Shapiro.

True, some meteorologists and sports reporters eventually became anchors, but for the purposes of this story, lets talk about anchors-only.

For me, I’d have to say Bob Palmer, first and foremost. His voice defined my childhood. I’d add Bill Stuart. Adele Arakawa. And Ward Lucas.

Ward Lucas has passed away, at the age of 75. He retired from 9News in Denver back in 2009, after more than 30 years working at the station as a reporter and anchor, covering some of the biggest stories in our lifetime across the state of Colorado and more.

The crazy thing is even without listening to any of the videos 9News has posted in tribute to him, I can still hear his voice! Along with the others I mentioned as well, theirs were voices that echoed throughout living rooms and kitchens all across the state for so many years, that it really doesn’t take much to conjure up the sound of their voice in your head.

Lucas retired in 2009 and became a well accomplished author, writing three books after he retired, adding to his list of accomplishments that included more than 70 broadcasting awards including 11 Emmys.

You can read more about his life and career on the 9News website.
