The Stanley Hotel in Estes Park, Colorado, is renowned for its stunning views, luxurious accommodations, and chilling connection to one of Stephen King’s most famous works, The Shining. Among the many haunted tales surrounding the hotel, Room 217 stands out as a key part of both the hotel’s eerie history and King’s personal experience that inspired the horror novel.

In 1974, Stephen King and his wife, Tabitha, decided to spend a night at The Stanley Hotel, which was preparing to close for the winter season. The isolation of the nearly empty hotel and its grand yet somewhat eerie atmosphere left a significant impact on King. He and his wife stayed in Room 217, a room that already had its own ghostly reputation long before King’s visit.

Room 217 is believed to be haunted by the spirit of Elizabeth Wilson, a former housekeeper at the hotel. In 1911, Wilson was seriously injured in an explosion caused by a gas leak while she was lighting lamps in the room. Though she survived the blast, she is said to have continued “working” in the hotel even after her death. Guests staying in Room 217 have reported strange occurrences, including items moving on their own, luggage being unpacked, and mysterious cold spots.

For Stephen King, this room became the creative seed for The Shining. That night, after wandering the empty halls of the hotel and experiencing unsettling dreams, he awoke with the full idea for the novel in his mind. The isolation and grandeur of The Stanley Hotel became the inspiration for the fictional Overlook Hotel, and Room 217 took on a life of its own as the room with dark, otherworldly secrets.

Today, Room 217 remains one of the most requested rooms at The Stanley, drawing fans of horror and paranormal enthusiasts alike who are eager to experience the chilling atmosphere that influenced one of the greatest horror novels ever written. While the hotel’s connection to The Shining has made it famous, its ghostly reputation has been solidified by decades of eerie encounters and unexplained events.

For those who dare, spending a night in Room 217 offers a blend of history, mystery, and a brush with the paranormal. Whether it’s the legacy of Elizabeth Wilson’s ghost or the lingering influence of King’s imagination, one thing is clear: Room 217 has an enduring allure that continues to haunt the minds of its guests.
