Hammond’s Candies: A Century-Old Sweet Tradition in Denver

Since 1920, Hammond’s Candies has been crafting delicious treats for Colorado and beyond. Founded by Carl T. Hammond, Sr. after returning from World War I, the company started with a dedication to quality, evident in its enduring motto, “Nothing is more important than quality.” Despite the hardships of the Great Depression, Hammond’s reputation for high-quality, hand-pulled candies kept it in business, laying the foundation for a beloved Denver institution.

The current Hammond’s factory at Washington Street and 58th Avenue in Denver produces over 100 million candies each year. Inside the 35,000-square-foot facility, 300 employees make everything from candy canes and lollipops to chocolates. With around 2,500 pounds of sugar used daily, Hammond’s has become synonymous with classic holiday treats, including its signature candy canes available in over 30 flavors.

Beyond Denver, Hammond’s chocolates and candies are sold by major retailers like Trader Joe’s and See’s Candies, while its iconic treats, like the Mitchell Sweet, delight customers internationally. Hammond’s artisan marshmallow caramel treat, the Mitchell Sweet, is made through a three-day process, while the intricate ribbon candy is hand-stretched and crimped to perfection.

In 2007, entrepreneur Andrew Schuman took over the company, expanding its offerings with Mellow Fluffs marshmallows and snacks, while preserving the traditional techniques that have made Hammond’s a household name. Today, you can find Hammond’s products worldwide, from Canada to Dubai.

At the retail shop in Denver, visitors can explore a variety of unique treats, from bourbon pecan chocolate bars to “oopsies” candy canes. Hammond’s offers factory tours, attracting over 100,000 visitors annually to see firsthand how this historic candy company continues to handcraft sweets with care.
