Denver Animal Shelter’s Bedtime Stories Event Brings Holiday Cheer to Pets and Families

This December, the Denver Animal Shelter invites the community to snuggle up for a heartwarming tradition: the return of its annual Bedtime Stories event. Scheduled for Dec. 14-15 and Dec. 18-19, this unique initiative offers volunteers the chance to read soothing bedtime stories to shelter pets while supporting a good cause. Participants, dressed in pajamas, not only bring comfort to the animals but also help raise funds for the shelter’s most vulnerable residents.

For a $20 donation, families can book a time slot to read to adoptable dogs and cats. The event begins with 15 minutes of holiday card-making, where participants craft personalized messages to brighten the animals’ kennels. Reading sessions are offered in two evening time slots—4:30-5:30 p.m. and 5:30-6:30 p.m.—to accommodate busy schedules. Guests can enjoy cookies, hot chocolate, and the warm glow of knowing they’ve made a difference in the lives of shelter animals.

The Denver government describes the event as “uniting humans with canines and felines through the written word.” It’s a heartwarming way to bring a sense of home to pets awaiting adoption and to foster meaningful connections between animals and people, particularly children.

Space is limited, and the shelter encourages early sign-ups to ensure a spot. If you miss this holiday event, mark your calendar for the Valentine’s Day edition in February, offering another chance to share love and stories with Denver’s furry friends.
