Iconic Denver Mexican Restaurant to Close After 66 Years

A beloved Denver institution, Taco House, has announced it will be closing its doors for good after serving the community for 66 years. The family-owned Mexican restaurant, located at 579 Federal Boulevard, has been a staple of the area since it first opened in 1958.

A Legacy on Federal Boulevard

Federal Boulevard is known for its vibrant culture, and Taco House has been a prominent part of that history. Founded by the owners’ grandfather, the restaurant became one of the first in Denver to offer affordable Mexican food with carry-out options. At its peak in the 1970s, Taco House operated 11 locations across the metro area. While its name suggests tacos were the main draw, the restaurant’s signature dishes became its cheese enchiladas and famous enchilada sauce.

Over the decades, Taco House became more than a restaurant—it was a gathering place for families and friends celebrating birthdays, remembering loved ones, or grabbing a quick, satisfying meal. Many customers fondly recall its All You Can Eat Special, which was a highlight of its menu.

Challenges in a Changing Landscape

The decision to close comes after years of mounting challenges. Taco House cited rising costs of food, paper products, wages, insurance, and taxes as significant factors, in addition to the financial strain caused by the COVID-19 pandemic. Despite efforts to adapt and remain affordable, the family found it increasingly difficult to sustain operations.

A Heartfelt Farewell

In a public statement, the owners expressed their gratitude to the loyal customers and employees who have been part of the Taco House family:
“Sixty-six years is a long time for a business to operate, particularly a family business… Taco House became like a ‘home’ to countless customers and employees as we established relationships and touched lives in small, but meaningful ways.”

The statement also shared the emotional difficulty of the decision, highlighting the restaurant’s long history of bringing people together over shared meals.

Taco House plans to remain open until December 31, 2024, conditions permitting, and the owners encourage customers to call ahead to confirm availability in the final weeks.

Saying Goodbye to a Denver Icon

As Taco House prepares to serve its last meals, the closure marks the end of an era for Denver’s Federal Boulevard. It is a poignant reminder of the challenges faced by small, family-owned businesses in today’s economic climate. While its doors may soon close, the memories and impact of Taco House will live on in the hearts of its community.
