Watch Out: Widespread ‘Stomach Bug’ Sweeping Through Colorado

Have you or your friends and family in Colorado been hit by the stomach bug recently? You’re not alone. Across the state, many are dealing with a nasty virus that’s making its rounds, especially as we close out 2024.

I personally fell victim to the dreaded “stomach bug” in early December, spending 24 hours glued to the bathroom. Initially, I thought it was something I ate, but then the fever set in, and I realized it was something more. It was miserable, and if you’ve had it, you know exactly what I’m talking about.

Colorado Sees Surge in Norovirus Cases

If you haven’t experienced this stomach bug yet, consider yourself lucky. However, you might want to take some precautions to avoid it. According to the Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment, the state has seen a significant uptick in norovirus cases, mirroring trends across the country. Typically, Colorado sees between 5 to 114 cases during the last quarter of the year. However, in 2024, that number nearly tripled, with almost 160 cases reported.

Given that many people don’t seek medical help when dealing with norovirus, the true number of affected Coloradans is likely much higher.

How to Avoid Getting Norovirus

The best way to avoid getting stuck in your bathroom with this stomach bug is simple: wash your hands. Norovirus isn’t killed by hand sanitizers (it’s frustrating, isn’t it?). Make sure to wash your hands thoroughly with soap and warm water, especially after using the restroom, to prevent the spread of this nasty virus. It’s a small but effective step in protecting yourself and your loved ones from this unpleasant illness.
