Suspected Drunk Driver Hits Patrol Car, Injuring Officer in Commerce City

A Commerce City police officer was injured early Tuesday morning when a suspected drunk driver struck the officer’s patrol car. According to the Commerce City Police Department, the incident occurred just after midnight while the officer was investigating a separate crash on Interstate 270 west of Vasquez Boulevard.

The Colorado Department of Transportation (CDOT) reported that eastbound I-270 was closed between I-76, I-270, and CO 265/Brighton Boulevard due to the initial crash. While the officer was on the scene, a suspected drunk driver rear-ended the patrol vehicle. The officer was taken to a local hospital but is expected to recover.

Commerce City police have not provided information on the status of the suspected drunk driver, nor have they confirmed whether the driver was cited or taken into custody. The investigation is ongoing, with the Colorado State Patrol assisting with the case.

By 5:20 a.m., CDOT announced that eastbound I-270 had reopened to traffic.

As New Year’s Eve approaches, law enforcement is reminding drivers to find a safe and sober ride home. To help, there are numerous free and discounted transportation options available for partygoers. For the 16th year, the Regional Transportation District (RTD), in partnership with Molson Coors, will provide zero-fare rides for the holiday. All RTD bus and rail routes, as well as Access-a-Ride and FlexRide services, will be free.
