Aurora Rec Center Launches Affordable Childcare for Parents Looking to Stay Healthy

Balancing family life with fitness goals can be tough for many parents, but a new program at the Aurora Central Recreation Center is making it easier. The Kidz Care Program offers affordable childcare, giving parents the chance to focus on their health while their children are well taken care of.

The cost-effective service charges just $7 per hour, or parents can purchase a five-hour punch pass for $30. According to Ethan Van Sickle, a program specialist at the center, lack of childcare has often been a barrier for parents trying to reach their fitness goals.

“We want to help families stay healthy and achieve their goals,” Van Sickle explained. “We saw a need for parents who wanted to take fitness classes or work out but couldn’t because they had no one to watch their kids.”

Safety is a top priority for the Kidz Care Program. Each child and parent receive matching wristbands for identification, and emergency contact information is readily available. All staff members are certified through Red Cross and babysitting programs, ensuring peace of mind for parents.

The program goes beyond basic supervision. “We offer a variety of activities, like drawing, coloring, and themed events during the holidays,” said Van Sickle. “Kids stay engaged and have fun while their parents are working out.”

Parents who have used the service rave about the positive impact on their lives. Erica Horton, a stay-at-home mom who also homeschools her children, shared her experience: “This program gives me a stress-free moment to take care of myself. When I pour into myself, I’m able to pour into my kids and be a better mom.”

The Kidz Care Program is available for children aged 18 months to 7 years, with hours on weekdays from 4:30 to 7:30 p.m. and on weekends from 8:30 to 11:30 a.m. Though still in its pilot phase, the program has received positive feedback, and if successful, Aurora PROS plans to expand Kidz Care to other recreation facilities in Aurora.
