Passenger Shocked After Wrongly Accused of Vaping Mid-Flight

A passenger on a United Airlines flight has shared their unsettling experience after being wrongly accused of vaping in the airplane’s lavatory. The incident occurred on a flight from Las Vegas to Denver, with the passenger, Reddit user SmellyMickey, detailing the event in a post on r/unitedairlines.

According to the post, the passenger entered the lavatory shortly after takeoff to wash their hands and put in contact lenses. However, their time in the bathroom was abruptly interrupted by a repeated knocking at the door. When they opened it, they were greeted by a group of flight attendants, one of whom immediately accused them of vaping in the lavatory. “We know you were vaping in the lavatory. The alarm went off. Show me the vape,” the flight attendant allegedly said.

Despite the passenger’s explanation—claiming they were simply washing their hands and putting in contact lenses—the situation escalated. The passenger explained they even emptied their pockets to prove they weren’t carrying a vape device. “Nobody said anything else to me the rest of the flight,” the passenger recalled. They were left “extremely shaken” by the confrontation, and as they walked back to their seat, one of the flight attendants ordered, “Search the bathroom!”

The passenger further noted that they never heard any audible alarm, and no announcements were made by the pilot about vaping. The flight proceeded without further mention of the incident, and the passenger expressed concern over the potential impact on their standing with United Airlines, especially considering their frequent flyer status.

Reddit users quickly responded, offering advice and sympathizing with the passenger. Many criticized the flight attendant’s approach, with some suggesting the passenger file a complaint with the airline. “Call and complain, might get some miles,” one user suggested. Others pointed out the lack of evidence and agreed that the incident should be reported, even though it was unlikely to lead to any further action from the airline.

Vaping on planes is taken seriously, with the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) imposing fines of up to $1,771 for violations. Such accusations can lead to flight delays and other disruptions, emphasizing the severity of the situation. However, incidents involving vaping on airplanes are not rare. There have been several reports of passengers vaping discreetly or openly, even in defiance of the strict regulations.

In a similar case, a United Airlines passenger was allegedly seen vaping throughout a flight, but the flight crew reportedly did nothing to address the behavior. This highlights the complexity of managing vaping on flights and the varying responses from airline staff.

For those facing similar situations, the advice from Reddit users remains consistent: speak up, file a complaint, and document the incident to ensure your side of the story is on record.
