Denver Officials Advise Shoveling Snow Only When Safe During Arctic Blast

With dangerously cold arctic air sweeping through Denver, city officials are urging residents to prioritize safety when clearing snow from sidewalks. While city regulations require snow to be shoveled within 24 hours after a snowfall, officials are offering more flexibility during this extreme weather event.

Ryan Huff, Communications Director for Denver’s Community and Planning Department, emphasized that the city wants residents to clear their sidewalks as soon as it’s safe to do so. “The priority this weekend and into Monday is safety. If it’s safe to shovel, please do so, but we don’t want anyone risking injury in negative temperatures or slipping on ice,” Huff said.

Typically, homeowners face a $150 fine for failing to shovel their sidewalks within the required time frame. However, given the extreme cold and icy conditions, the city will take a more lenient approach to enforcement during this arctic blast.

Officials are advising homeowners to stay inside until the weather conditions improve and it is safer to clear their walkways. The goal is to ensure that everyone stays safe while managing the snow removal process.
