Thinking About Backyard Chickens in Denver? Here’s What You Need to Know

With egg prices soaring due to new cage-free laws and ongoing bird flu outbreaks, some Denver residents are considering a fresh solution—raising their own egg-laying hens. But is it legal?

Denver’s Rules on Backyard Chickens

Denver’s Revised Municipal Code (Chapter 8) allows residents to apply for a permit to keep chickens on their property. However, there are a few key rules to follow:

  • You can own up to 8 female chickens (hens).
  • Each chicken must have at least 16 square feet of permeable land.
  • A secure, enclosed shelter is required to protect the chickens from the weather.
  • Selling eggs or chickens is not allowed under this permit.
  • Fencing is required to prevent chickens from escaping the property.

A Worthwhile Investment?

If you’re looking for a way to save on eggs and enjoy fresh, home-raised produce, keeping backyard chickens in Denver is a legal option—as long as you follow the rules. With a proper permit and setup, you could have farm-fresh eggs right from your own backyard!
