3 Colorado Kids, 2 Dogs Rescued After Getting Lost in Storm Drain System

Three children and two dogs had to be rescued over the weekend after getting lost in an underground storm drainage system in Security-Widefield, a community southeast of Colorado Springs.

According to the Security Fire Department, the kids entered the storm drain through an open pipe and became disoriented in the maze-like tunnels. Concerned neighbors joined firefighters in the search effort. After an extensive operation, crews located the group about half a mile from their entry point and safely pulled them out through a manhole.

Thankfully, no one was injured.

The fire department used the incident as a cautionary reminder to families: “Kids may think it would be fun to explore storm drains looking for those ninja turtles, but it can be very dangerous and even deadly.”

Officials noted the serious risks involved in entering underground infrastructure, including getting lost, hypothermia, sudden flooding, toxic gases, lack of oxygen, and encounters with wildlife like rattlesnakes. Parents are urged to talk with their children about the dangers of exploring storm drains or similar structures.
