Ride Malfunction at Elitch Gardens Leaves Dozens Suspended in Air

Around 40 people were left suspended in mid-air after the Star Flyer ride malfunctioned at Elitch Gardens amusement park on Saturday afternoon. The incident occurred just before park closing time, stranding riders for approximately 45 minutes high above the ground.

The Denver Fire Department, including its specialized High Angle Rescue Team, responded to the scene but ultimately did not need to intervene, as Elitch Gardens staff were able to safely and slowly lower the ride without any evacuations. Park officials confirmed that no injuries occurred, and emphasized that the ride will undergo a full safety inspection — part of the park’s standard daily protocols.

The Star Flyer, one of the park’s tallest rides at 17 stories, spins guests in swings at dizzying heights. Fortunately, when the ride stalled, it was already descending, leaving riders within 20 feet of the ground — a rescue range deemed manageable by emergency crews.

Guests outside the park gates described moments of confusion and concern when they noticed fire trucks pulling up to the scene. “People were yelling, and we got scared,” one visitor said. “We didn’t know what was happening.”

The Denver Fire Department noted that their teams regularly train at Elitch Gardens to prepare for scenarios like this. Park officials assured guests that safety remains a top priority.
