Aurora Police Crack Down on Street Racing with Bold New Enforcement Strategy

Street racing in Aurora is no longer going unchecked. Over the weekend, the Aurora Police Department’s newly energized Street Racing Task Force made its presence known with a high-profile bust that ended in a chase and a crash.

It started around 8 p.m. Sunday when officers spotted a gray pickup truck doing donuts and burnouts on private property near 40th Avenue. Inside were three people — one reportedly riding in the bed of the truck. As police approached, the driver blew out both rear tires and took off, leading officers on a pursuit that spanned into Denver. The chase came to a halt when the truck crashed into a median on I-25 near Colorado Boulevard.

“This is the first example of a new posture by the Aurora Police Department,” said Commander Matt Brukbacher. “We’ve always kept an eye on speed racing, but now we’re taking a much more aggressive enforcement approach.”

The task force, composed of 10 to 20 officers, is now actively pursuing violators. Brukbacher emphasized the impact illegal racing has on both public safety and property owners — noting that damage to one parking lot alone was in the thousands of dollars.

The 19-year-old driver now faces multiple charges including felony eluding and reckless driving. The two passengers, both under 20, were issued trespassing citations. But Brukbacher had a stern warning for others: “We will seize your car if it’s used in a crime. It will sit with us for months — even if you’re still making payments on it.”

He also urged parents to step in: “This is dangerous, and it’s time families take this seriously. We’re not just rolling in marked patrol cars anymore. We’re coordinating, we’re arresting, and we’re holding vehicles as evidence.”

Aurora PD says this is just the beginning of more coordinated enforcement to come. To report illegal street racing, visit: reportstreetracing.com.
