Denver Moves to Ban Scooters from Sidewalks with New Safety Rules

In a unanimous vote, the Denver City Council has approved new safety regulations aimed at keeping electric scooters off city sidewalks and reducing injuries. The proposed rules target scooter vendors like Lime and Byrd and are designed to improve how scooters are used and parked throughout the city.

The legislation requires scooters to be equipped with sidewalk detection technology, ensuring riders stay in designated bike lanes or approved roadways. Additionally, new rules would mandate specific parking zones to keep sidewalks clear for pedestrians and introduce compliance tests to educate riders on proper usage.

The move comes as Denver Health reported nearly 2,000 scooter-related injuries in 2024 alone. City officials hope these measures will reduce accidents while keeping public spaces safer and more accessible. The bill will head to the full council for final approval in the coming weeks.
