Colorado’s $20M Pedestrian Bridge Sparks Public Outrage and Preservation Concerns

Colorado’s plans for a $20 million pedestrian bridge connecting the Colorado State Capitol to Lincoln Veterans Memorial Park have ignited a firestorm of criticism from residents and preservationists alike. Touted by Governor Jared Polis as a celebration of the state’s 150th anniversary in 2026, the bridge was unveiled with renderings that highlight its use of Colorado materials and design inspired by the state’s flowing rivers. Polis described it as an interactive experience showcasing Colorado’s history and future, featuring local art, viewing platforms, and sculptural monuments.

However, many Coloradans and organizations like Historic Denver view the project as unnecessary and disruptive. Residents expressed frustration over the bridge’s steep price tag, with some questioning, “Who is this for?” and pointing out that most pedestrians already use existing street crossings at Colfax and 14th Avenues. Critics argue that the bridge doesn’t improve pedestrian connectivity and might even hinder civic protests traditionally held at the Capitol.

Historic Denver has been vocal about its concerns, stating the design doesn’t align with federal or city guidelines and violates the State’s own 2019 Cultural Landscape Report. President and CEO John Deffenbaugh described the bridge as “wasteful” and “functionally useless,” criticizing its impact on Denver’s Civic Center Historic District, a nationally recognized landmark. Deffenbaugh urged the Denver Landmark Preservation Commission to reject the project, advocating instead for enhanced crosswalks, street-level pedestrian amenities, and traffic calming measures to improve safety and accessibility.

Despite assurances from the Governor’s Office that the bridge will reflect Colorado’s topography and include meaningful art installations, the backlash continues, with many residents calling it a misplaced priority and a misuse of funds. As the debate intensifies, the fate of this controversial project hangs in the balance.
