Colorado’s Tunnel Drive Trail Lets You Hike Through Time—and Granite

Just outside of Cañon City, Colorado, the Tunnel Drive Trail offers a one-of-a-kind hiking experience that’s equal parts history and scenery. This flat, four-mile roundtrip trail follows the path of an old railroad bed, cutting dramatically through canyon walls and offering elevated views of the Arkansas River below. What makes it truly unique are the three granite-blasted tunnels hikers pass through—each carved straight into 1.7-million-year-old rock, streaked with eye-catching ribbons of pink and white granite.

Ideal for families, beginners, or anyone looking for a scenic stroll, the trail features crushed gravel underfoot and thoughtful amenities like benches and trash cans scattered along the way. The path hugs the south side of the river, with frequent sightings of kayakers navigating the rapids below and passenger trains winding their way through the gorge. With only about 213 feet of total elevation gain, the route is accessible but never dull—offering history, geology, and river views in one peaceful package.

Whether you’re visiting Cañon City or looking for a new day-trip adventure in southern Colorado, Tunnel Drive is a short and sweet hike that feels like you’re stepping through time.
