Colorado’s New Area Code Drops July 7—Here’s What 748 Means for You

Colorado is getting a new area code this summer—748—set to launch on July 7. This marks the state’s sixth area code and will overlay the existing 970 region, which includes cities like Fort Collins, Greeley, Grand Junction, Vail, and Durango. While the change won’t affect pricing or coverage, customers will start seeing the 748 code assigned to new phone lines as early as this month. Widespread use isn’t expected until late 2026.

The 748 overlay was approved by the Colorado Public Utilities Commission (PUC) due to the increasing demand for new phone numbers. Just like the 970 area code, users with 748 numbers must dial all 10 digits to make local calls. The state reminds residents and businesses to update all devices and materials—like security systems, fax machines, business cards, and contact lists—to recognize and reflect the new area code. Emergency numbers like 911 and 988 will continue to work with just three digits.

The original 303 area code once covered all of Colorado. Since then, additional area codes—719, 720, 970, 983, and now 748—have been added to keep up with growth. The new 748 code is expected to meet numbering needs in western and northern Colorado for the next 38 years.
