A family outing at Chatfield State Park turned tragic Monday evening after a father drowned while paddleboarding with his two young children. Colorado Parks and Wildlife said the man, in his 30s, was paddleboarding near the swim beach when a powerful gust of wind overturned the board just after 5 p.m. While nearby boaters were able to rescue the children—who were both wearing life jackets—the father was not wearing one and disappeared beneath the surface.
Emergency responders from South Metro Fire Rescue, West Metro Fire Rescue, and Colorado Parks and Wildlife launched a large-scale search operation involving multiple boats, dive teams, and an underwater drone. After nearly two hours, the man’s body was recovered. Officials said the water temperature and fatigue likely played a role, emphasizing that even strong swimmers can struggle in Colorado reservoirs.
Earlier in the day, high winds also flipped a kayak on the same reservoir, though no injuries were reported. The man’s name has not yet been released pending notification of family. The Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office and Coroner’s Office are continuing the investigation. Officials urge anyone recreating on Colorado waterways to wear a life jacket and remain cautious, especially during unpredictable summer weather conditions.
