Confirmed Landspout Tornado Damages Franktown Businesses, No Injuries Reported

The National Weather Service confirmed that a landspout tornado briefly touched down in Franktown, Colorado, on Monday afternoon, causing significant damage but no reported injuries. The tornado, which lasted just 90 seconds, struck around 2:33 p.m. and hit a shopping center that houses seven businesses. All of the businesses suffered roof damage, and one experienced a partial roof collapse.

Despite the suddenness of the storm, all occupants were able to evacuate safely. Deborah Takahara, public information director for the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office, noted the extent of the destruction, calling it “severe.” The tornado came without a formal warning, though the NWS had issued a special weather statement citing radar detection of a strengthening thunderstorm.

Residents nearby described a chaotic and fast-moving scene. Jonathan Avendano, who witnessed the event, said, “The sky was swirling… and then we saw the roof just fly.” Another resident, Michelle from Castle Rock, recounted rushing to her dog’s daycare only to find the building next door had lost its roof—pieces of which landed in the daycare’s backyard. Thankfully, no pets or people were harmed.

As clean-up efforts begin, local authorities are reminding residents to stay alert during severe weather season—even fast-forming landspouts can pack a serious punch.
