Over 70 Neglected Horses Rescued from Rural Colorado Property

In a heartbreaking case of neglect, more than 70 horses and foals were rescued in early July from a rural Colorado property. Humane Colorado, a local nonprofit, said the animals suffered from severe neglect, with many found painfully lame, malnourished, and afflicted by years of untreated medical issues. Some had severely overgrown hooves, untreated wounds, infections, and signs of advanced lameness.

The horses were transported to the Harmony Equine Center in Franktown, where veterinarians are now treating a host of conditions including eye injuries, abscesses, and hoof and joint problems. Several of the rescued horses are also believed to be pregnant.

The rescue operation was physically demanding, with the team enduring intense heat, torrential rain, and even a flat tire to get the horses to safety. Humane Colorado has called the situation one of immense scale, urging the public to donate and support the horses’ long-term recovery.

“These horses appear to have gone without proper care for a very long time,” said Dr. Gardner-Graff. “It’s going to take extensive resources to bring them back into good health.”

Donations will help provide urgent medical care, farrier work, specialized nutrition, and foaling support. Contributions can be made directly at HumaneColorado.org.
