Denver to Close City Offices Friday Amid $200M Budget Shortfall
Denver residents heading into the Labor Day weekend should expect widespread city office closures. On Friday, most city and county offices will shut down as part of Mayor Mike Johnston’s plan to address a projected $200 million budget shortfall.
Friday marks the first of two mandatory furlough days this year; the second is scheduled for Nov. 28. City officials said the move comes in addition to recent cost-cutting measures that included 169 layoffs, leaving 666 positions unfilled, and shifting 92 roles to alternative funding sources.
While administrative offices and public services will pause operations, emergency responders such as police, fire, and sheriff’s deputies will continue working as usual. Partner entities like Denver Health will also remain open.
