Denver to Close City Offices Friday Amid $200M Budget Shortfall

Denver residents heading into the Labor Day weekend should expect widespread city office closures. On Friday, most city and county offices will shut down as part of Mayor Mike Johnston’s plan to address a projected $200 million budget shortfall.

Friday marks the first of two mandatory furlough days this year; the second is scheduled for Nov. 28. City officials said the move comes in addition to recent cost-cutting measures that included 169 layoffs, leaving 666 positions unfilled, and shifting 92 roles to alternative funding sources.

While administrative offices and public services will pause operations, emergency responders such as police, fire, and sheriff’s deputies will continue working as usual. Partner entities like Denver Health will also remain open.

Closed Friday and Monday (Sept. 2):

  • Mayor’s Office, City Council, Clerk and Recorder, Auditor’s Office

  • 311 non-emergency line (service requests available at denvergov.org)

  • Denver County Court and all state-operated courts in Denver

  • Building and Zoning permitting

  • Denver Motor Vehicle Title and Registration

  • Department of Housing Stability

  • Denver Human Services (emergency child/adult protection services will still operate)

  • Transportation & Infrastructure permit counters

  • Excise and Licenses customer service counter

  • Human Rights & Community Partnerships

  • All Denver Public Library locations

  • Office of Emergency Management

  • Office of Human Resources

  • Public Health and Environment offices (including Office of the Medical Examiner)

  • All Recreation Centers

  • Taxpayer Service Center

  • Solid Waste Management (trash and recycling pickup delayed one day)

  • Vehicle Impound Facility (York St.)

  • Denver Vital Records office

  • Wastewater Management Building

  • All Workforce Centers
