Drone Technology Helps Locate Suspects in Buena Vista Crawl Space

In Buena Vista, law enforcement used drone technology to track down two wanted individuals hiding in a crawl space, showcasing how modern tools are reshaping police work in Colorado.

The Chaffee County Sheriff’s Office released a video this week showing a tactical drone navigating a dark, dusty crawl space before locating the suspects pressed against a wall. Instead of deploying gas or sending an officer into the confined space, the drone safely did the job, reducing risks for both law enforcement and the suspects.

Working alongside the Salida and Buena Vista police departments, the operation ended peacefully with no injuries reported.

The case highlights a growing trend: Colorado police agencies increasingly turning to drones for critical operations. Lakewood police now use them to respond to certain service calls, and earlier this summer, Loveland police deployed a drone to locate a robbery suspect who had fled on foot.

As more departments adopt the technology, drones are becoming a valuable tool in balancing officer safety, public safety, and efficiency during high-stakes situations.
