Coyotes Killing Dogs Across Denver Metro Prompts Warnings for Pet Owners
Colorado wildlife officials are warning pet owners to stay vigilant after a recent string of deadly coyote attacks on dogs in the Denver metro area. The Broomfield Police Department confirmed at least three recent incidents in the Anthem neighborhood, where coyotes killed small dogs, sparking concern among residents.
“Broomfield is home to many wild animals, including coyotes, foxes, owls, hawks, and eagles,” officials said in a statement. “While coexistence is encouraged, public safety comes first. Unattended pets are seen by wild animals as prey.”
Coyotes are highly adaptable and can easily scale six-foot fences, meaning even fenced yards aren’t foolproof. Authorities warned that simply watching pets from a doorway isn’t enough—owners should stay within five feet of their animals when outside.
To protect pets, police urge residents to:
-
Keep dogs on a short leash (6 feet or less)
-
Supervise pets outside—even in fenced yards
-
Avoid dense vegetation or known den areas
-
Remove outdoor pet food and water bowls
-
Keep cats indoors
Officials also noted that neighboring cities have seen similar attacks, including Erie, where a mountain lion recently snatched a small dog. As Colorado’s urban areas continue to expand into natural habitats, encounters like these are becoming increasingly common—and deadly for unprotected pets.
