Denver Zoo Scorpion Becomes a Mom — Just in Time for Halloween
Just in time for spooky season, the Denver Zoo has welcomed some creepy-crawly babies — dozens of them, in fact. Kylo Ren, an Asian forest scorpion and part of the Zoo’s Animal Ambassador program, recently surprised her caretakers by giving birth to a batch of baby scorpions, known as scorplings.
Scorpions are fascinating creatures — not only do some species glow under black light, but mothers also carry their newborns on their backs until the young are ready to face the world. Kylo Ren, who arrived at the Denver Zoo in April, is now proudly showing off her little ones while keeping them close through their first molting cycle.
Once they’re big enough to venture out on their own, some of the scorplings will remain at the Denver Zoo, while others will be sent to partner institutions. For now, Kylo Ren and her growing family are staying behind the scenes, getting plenty of rest while delighting zoo staff with this perfectly timed Halloween surprise.
