Man Posing as Utility Worker Breaks Into Longtime Denver Couple’s Home

A longtime Denver couple returned home Friday to a startling discovery: a man disguised as a utility worker had broken into their house, smashed a door, and taken off with several belongings. The couple, who has lived in their south Denver home for nearly 30 years, said they’ve never experienced anything like it.

They realized something was wrong the moment they arrived. The front door, which should have been locked, was slightly open. A quick check of the house revealed the back door’s glass had been shattered, with broken pieces scattered in a clear path showing where the intruder entered.

Security camera footage revealed a man dressed to look like a utility employee, complete with a hard hat and reflective vest. However, details in his outfit — including casual footwear — stood out as an obvious red flag to the homeowner, who works in the industry and immediately recognized the disguise as fake.

The intruder took off with about $100 in cash, a guitar, and two credit cards. The stolen cards were used twice before being shut down, and the suspect attempted to use them again after they were canceled.

The couple is now hoping the video footage will help identify the man responsible. The break-in left them shaken, both by the intrusion and by the fact that the suspect went to such lengths to conceal his identity.

Denver police are investigating and are asking anyone who recognizes the man in the video to contact them.
