Pickup Ends Up on the Tracks, Smacked by Train Near DIA
Aurora police are looking for the driver of a pickup truck involved in a crash with an RTD A Line train after the truck was seen on traffic cameras driving on the wrong side of the road before the impact.
According to video released by Aurora Police, a white pickup with a black camper shell was traveling south on Sable Boulevard near Smith Road when the train crossing arms lowered. The truck then crossed into the northbound lanes and briefly stopped on the tracks.
Around 9:50 a.m., an eastbound RTD train heading toward Denver International Airport struck the bed of the truck. Despite being hit, the truck kept moving and continued southbound away from the scene.
Passengers on board said the train stopped suddenly, but many didn’t immediately realize what had happened. About 50 people were riding the train at the time, and one person was taken to the hospital with minor injuries. Everyone else was safely escorted off the train between Sable Boulevard and Chambers Road, an area without a platform, and directed to shuttle buses to continue to DIA.
Some riders said the disruption could delay their arrival at the airport by as much as two hours, raising concerns about missed flights and late arrivals to work.
This is the second A Line crash at the Smith Road and Sable Boulevard crossing in the past six months. In August, an RTD train collided with a semitrailer at the same intersection. The latest incident is being investigated, and anyone with information about the pickup truck driver is encouraged to contact authorities, Fox31 reported.
