Chilling DIA Surveillance Footage Reveals How Close Crews Were to Stopping Runway Tragedy

Newly released surveillance footage from Denver International Airport shows the moments before a person was struck and killed by a Frontier Airlines plane preparing for takeoff.

The thermal imaging video, first reported by FOX31, shows the individual walking onto Runway 17L shortly before Frontier Flight 4345 departed for Los Angeles. Authorities froze the public video before the moment of impact, but emergency radio traffic captured the chaotic response afterward, including reports of body parts on the runway.

Federal officials said the person had trespassed onto airport property and climbed over the perimeter fence before reaching the active runway. Airport radio traffic from moments before the collision showed crews were already aware someone was on the runway, but aviation experts say the timing likely made it nearly impossible to stop the aircraft before impact.

The collision happened around 11:19 p.m. and triggered an engine fire aboard the plane, forcing an evacuation. Twelve passengers reportedly suffered minor injuries during the emergency evacuation process.

Retired pilot and aviation safety expert Randy Klatt said Denver International Airport’s massive size makes incidents like this especially difficult to respond to quickly. Even if security spots a trespasser immediately, getting crews across the airport fast enough to stop a plane already moving down the runway can be nearly impossible.

The incident has also raised new questions about airport security and perimeter fencing standards. Klatt said events like this could lead to increased scrutiny over whether airports need stronger security requirements to prevent future runway intrusions.

The Denver Police Department, FAA, and TSA are all investigating the incident, while the National Transportation Safety Board is still determining whether the case meets the threshold for a formal investigation.
