Denver police seek witness videos after Broadway street takeover
Denver police are asking the public to submit photos and videos after a street takeover near Broadway and Mississippi late Friday night into Saturday morning that featured drag racing, burnouts, fireworks and blocked traffic.
Officers responded around 12:15 a.m. Saturday and cleared the intersection without making any arrests or issuing citations. Police Chief Ron Thomas said officers chose not to take enforcement action at the scene due to safety concerns but gathered license plate information, observations and video evidence to identify those involved afterward.
Thomas said the department has recently increased the priority of street racing calls to improve response times. Denver’s street racing enforcement team has made 59 arrests and impounded 44 vehicles so far this year, and additional units are deployed when intelligence suggests a takeover may occur.
Police say drivers identified during the investigation could face public nuisance abatement actions, criminal charges, jail time or even have their vehicles seized. Investigators are encouraging anyone who witnessed the incident or captured photos or video to share that evidence with Denver police.
