Selecting and buying furniture for your newly purchased home, whether it’s a dining room set, a loveseat, a bed or any other piece, can be very fun and exciting. But, when you’re a first-time homeowner who finally has the liberty to choose the furniture that you want and like, to fill your private space. It can be just as difficult as it is fun.

So, before you give your home that desired Instagram and Pintrest-inspired look, or buy an item that you saw online, we wanted to provide you with the 6 things you should avoid when buying furniture.

1. Forgetting to measure everything in your space before buying.

The last thing you want after getting settled into your new house, is ending up with an piece of furniture that doesn’t fit through in front door. Or, that will make it through the rest of your doorways and walkways. However, it’s not hard to see what this is one of, if not the most, common mistakes many homeowners make when purchasing furniture.

2. Not paying attention to size and scale.

Always think of how your room will work as a whole and remember to keep things in proportion. For example, if you have too small of a rug, then might end up making the room look smaller than it is. Always consider how a particular piece of furniture will pair alongside other pieces in the room.

3. Buying without thinking how your furniture will fit your lifestyle.

Whatever your lifestyle is, it’s important to consider if the furniture you’re buying will hold up to those uses. Always ask yourself “How will this piece of furniture be used?” This helps avoid spending thousands of dollars because of the need to replace items after only a couple of months.

4. Not being realistic about the maintenance.

Always know the type of care needed on each piece of furniture you’ll be purchasing. You need to know how it can be cleaned, and also what would be the best (and also the worst) products to use on the piece.

5. Choosing style over comfort.

The furniture you choose should be fit for everyday use, and should be both comfortable! Remember that you’re going to live with it for many years to come.

6. Buying everything at once and impulse buying.

Getting the perfect piece of furniture is not always a quick decision, but as long as you’ve seriously considered it, then go ahead and add it add it to your new home.
