A new Colorado area code will arrive in 2026

Get ready to dial a different tune in parts of Colorado! The Colorado Public Utilities Commission (PUC) has announced the arrival of a new area code, 748, set to debut in early 2026. This addition will join the existing 970 area code, which currently serves western and northern cities like Fort Collins, Steamboat Springs, Grand Junction, Aspen, Durango, and Sterling.

What’s Changing and When?

Starting in early 2026, those requesting new phone service, additional lines, or moving their service within the 970 region may be assigned the new 748 area code. However, current 970 customers can rest assured—your existing numbers and area codes will remain unchanged. Local calls will also stay local, regardless of the area code.

Why the Change?

The 970 area code is simply running out of available numbers! It’s projected to reach capacity by the first quarter of 2026, making the introduction of 748 necessary to meet growing demand. The good news is that 748 is expected to provide a plentiful supply of numbers for the next 38 years.
