Dog Recovering After Being Abandoned at Aurora Animal Rescue

A dog is safe and on the road to recovery after being abandoned by its owner on the doorstep of an Aurora animal rescue on Sunday afternoon. The heart-wrenching incident was captured on the rescue’s doorbell camera, and the owner of L.O.L.A.’s Rescue is now seeking to identify the person responsible for leaving the dog behind.

The manager of L.O.L.A.’s Rescue found the dog inside a carrier on the front sidewalk and was stunned when she reviewed the footage from the camera. The video shows a woman walking up to the doorstep, tossing a mesh dog carrier with a puppy inside onto the ground, and walking away without a second glance.

“I think he’s probably a terrier, maybe a beagle or dachshund mix,” said Shani Lee, a manager at L.O.L.A.’s Rescue. The dog, now named Gulliver, sat abandoned and frightened outside for 30 minutes before Lee discovered him. At first, she had no idea how he ended up there until she reviewed the footage.

“I was mad at first because I felt bad that someone could just toss a dog like that,” Lee said. “He was very fearful.” However, after 24 hours in the rescue’s care, Gulliver began to show signs of improvement. “It’s just getting him over that hump of feeling safe and comfortable,” Lee explained.

Lee emphasized that abandoning a pet in such a way is never the solution. She added that had the person simply knocked on the door and asked for help, L.O.L.A.’s Rescue would have gladly provided assistance. “We probably would’ve given them an option,” she said.

Gulliver is currently receiving a medical evaluation before being placed up for adoption. “He would be the perfect little lap dog to someone he gets comfortable with,” Lee shared.

L.O.L.A.’s Rescue is asking anyone who recognizes the woman in the video to contact the Aurora Police Department. Additionally, the rescue is seeking donations to improve their security system to prevent future incidents like this one.
