Adams County Parents Arrested After Infant Found Abandoned in Road Median on Christmas

The Adams County Sheriff’s Office has arrested the biological parents of a one-month-old boy who was discovered abandoned in a road median on Christmas morning. Authorities have announced that charges, including felony child abuse, are being pursued against the parents, identified as Jarvis Sims, 42, and Christina Thurman, 33.

Infant Found in Median on Busy Road

The incident unfolded on Christmas Day when deputies responded to a 911 call around 9:20 a.m. A passerby spotted the infant in a car seat on the median near 7490 Pecos St., close to a busy intersection with U.S. 36. The baby was wearing only a diaper when found.

The car seat in which the baby was left was labeled “display only: Not intended for sale,” according to photos shared by the sheriff’s office.

Investigation Leads to Arrests

The Adams County Sheriff’s Office launched an immediate investigation, including a search for surveillance footage and witnesses in the area. Initially, authorities sought to reunite the infant with his family while investigating the circumstances of his abandonment.

By 4:30 p.m., deputies had made contact with the infant’s family, and by 8:30 p.m., the sheriff’s office announced the arrest of Sims and Thurman. Both are now facing charges of felony child abuse.

Baby Under Medical Observation

The infant is currently being observed at a children’s hospital as a precaution. Authorities have not released photos of the baby but stated he appears to be mixed-race or Hispanic.

Community Outrage and Next Steps

The case has sparked outrage in the community, particularly given the dangers posed by leaving a newborn in a busy roadway on a cold December morning. The sheriff’s office is continuing its investigation to ensure justice for the child.

This tragic incident serves as a reminder of the Safe Haven Laws in Colorado, which allow parents to legally and anonymously relinquish newborns at designated safe locations, such as hospitals or fire stations, without facing prosecution.
