Aurora Parents Could Face Fines if Teens Ride Dirt Bikes on City Streets
Aurora is considering a new law that would make parents responsible if their kids are caught riding dirt bikes or ATVs illegally on city streets.
The proposed ordinance, up for discussion at Monday’s city council study session, would fine parents $250 if minors under 18 are found operating off-highway vehicles in prohibited areas. Dirt bikes and ATVs are already banned on Aurora’s public roads under state law, and the city has its own regulations restricting where they can be used.
According to the draft ordinance, violations remain common despite existing rules, with teens often spotted riding on streets, sidewalks, open spaces, and near businesses. City leaders argue that holding parents and guardians accountable is the most effective way to curb the problem and improve safety for both riders and the public.
The measure is sponsored by Council member Francoise Bergan. If approved in study session, it would still require two formal votes from the council before becoming law.
