Colorado Mother Seeks Justice After Son Severely Injured in Hit-and-Run: “Anybody in Their Right Mind Would Stop”

Pedestrian-related accidents are on the rise in Colorado, and a recent hit-and-run has left an Aurora family devastated. Jason Johnson, a 46-year-old Aurora resident, was hospitalized after being struck by a vehicle Saturday night. The driver responsible did not stop to help.

According to Aurora Police reports, Johnson was hit just before 10 p.m. on Geneva Street, a few blocks from his home. His mother, Sandra Cox, received a call the next day with the heartbreaking news. “I don’t understand how someone could hit another person and leave them there like trash,” she shared, fighting back tears. “Jason woke up in the hospital with no memory of what happened.”

Jason suffered serious injuries, including brain and abdominal bleeding, leg fractures, facial cuts, and road rash. Cox suspects the driver fled due to possible intoxication or lack of insurance. “If it was an accident, they would’ve stopped. Anyone in their right mind would,” she said.

So far, Aurora police have reported 172 pedestrian-related crashes in 2024, with 13 fatalities. Cox is thankful for a Good Samaritan who stopped to call for help, potentially saving her son from further harm. “I want to thank that person for stopping—they didn’t have to, but they did.”

Unfortunately, there were no witnesses when officers arrived, and attempts to locate doorbell footage have been unsuccessful. Police are urging neighbors in the area to check their security cameras for any clues.

Cox is desperate for answers. “He can’t get out of bed or even feed himself. They need to be brought to justice,” she said. If you have information on this hit-and-run, please contact Aurora Police Department or Metro Denver Crime Stoppers at 1-720-913-STOP (7867).
