Denver Passengers Turned Around Mid-Flight as Violence Breaks Out in Mexico
Violence in parts of Mexico following the death of a cartel leader has disrupted travel plans for several Coloradans, leaving some stranded abroad and others grounded before their vacations even began.
According to KUSA 9 News, unrest broke out in Puerto Vallarta after a military operation resulted in the killing of a high-ranking cartel figure. Videos circulating online showed thick smoke rising over parts of the city, raising concerns among residents and tourists.
Lakewood resident Darin Dean said he was in Puerto Vallarta visiting family when the violence unfolded. From his family’s home near the city center, he could see smoke in areas he recognized well. Dean said the atmosphere quickly shifted.
“Everything went quiet,” he said, describing a sudden stillness in the city. Though he admitted feeling anxious, he said he did not believe he was in immediate danger. He and his family stayed indoors, keeping a low profile while monitoring the situation.
Dean had been scheduled to fly back to Colorado Sunday afternoon, but as reports of explosions and smoke emerged, he realized travel plans would likely change. He attempted to rebook flights for later in the week but found limited availability, leaving him uncertain about when he would be able to return home.
Meanwhile, sisters Becky and Jessica Paulsen were headed to Mexico for a company-sponsored trip when their flight was halted. After boarding, they were informed that security concerns in Puerto Vallarta required passengers to deplane. Other members of their travel group were reportedly turned around mid-flight near the U.S.–Mexico border.
While disappointed to miss out on the trip, the sisters said they were ultimately relieved to remain in Denver rather than be caught in the unrest. Despite the disruption, Dean said he still plans to return to Puerto Vallarta in the future, expressing confidence that authorities will stabilize the situation and restore normal travel conditions.
