Demaryius Thomas had chronic traumatic encephalopathy or CTE, which is a result of repeated blows to the head. Doctors from Boston University announced their finding Tuesday, as they were the ones studying the former Denver Broncos’ brain.

In December Thomas was found deceased at his home in Georgia, two weeks shy of his 34th birthday. His family attributed his death to seizures, which the NFL star had battled since 2019. However, the coroner’s office in Fulton County, Georgia, didn’t yet rule on the cause of death.

Neuropathologist Dr. Ann McKee told ABC News that, “CTE itself does not cause death. You don’t die from CTE, what CTE does is it changes your behavior and your personality.”

Family members of Thomas said in addition to the seizures, Thomas also struggled with memory loss, paranoia and other erratic behavior. All symptoms caused and been known to be a result of CTE
