Denver Zoo Welcomes Four African Lion Cubs
The Denver Zoo is roaring with excitement after the birth of four African lion cubs, the newest members of a family line that now stretches four generations at the zoo.
Proud mom Araali, born at the zoo in 2020, delivered the cubs after nearly 18 hours of labor. The zoo reports that she and her litter are bonding well behind the scenes. The cubs’ father, Usiku, has called Denver home since 2016 after arriving from the Lee Richardson Zoo in Kansas.
“We are so excited for the birth of these lion cubs and to see Araali already becoming a great mother,” said Katelyn Stache, the zoo’s assistant curator of carnivores. “Now that the cubs are here, we are enjoying listening to their noises and watching Araali as she navigates caring for all of them.”
The zoo says a live cub cam will be launching soon, allowing the public to get an up-close look at the cubs’ early days.
The lion litter is part of a larger baby boom at the Denver Zoo this year, which has also welcomed a Somali wild ass, a sloth, a pancake tortoise, and a reticulated giraffe—adding plenty of adorable new faces to the zoo’s lineup.
