An early morning crash in Denver’s Athmar Park neighborhood on Friday led to significant damage and a major emergency response after a driver crashed into a building, causing a gas line rupture. Authorities later revealed that the driver had suffered a gunshot wound prior to the crash.
Incident Details
At 12:04 a.m., the Denver Fire Department responded to reports of a building collapse near West Virginia Avenue and Federal Boulevard. Upon arrival, crews discovered that a vehicle had crashed into a Mexican restaurant located in a strip mall, causing extensive structural damage and a gas leak.
The driver, who was critically injured, was immediately transported to a local hospital. Hours later, Denver Police shared that the gunshot wound appeared to be self-inflicted.
Emergency Response

Xcel Energy was called to the scene to address the broken gas line, and the gas was successfully shut off shortly after their arrival.
