From Playgrounds to Patrols: Commerce City Deploys Drones to Reclaim Troubled Park
A Commerce City park meant for families and children has become the focus of a new police effort to combat drug activity — and drones are leading the charge. According to FOX31, the Commerce City Police Department is now using aerial surveillance technology in undercover operations to track and arrest suspects dealing drugs at Veterans Memorial Park. Drone footage recently captured a man suspected of conducting a drug deal before he was followed and arrested by undercover officers nearby.
Police say the goal is to reclaim the park for the community after growing reports of drug use, loitering, and weapons. Residents told FOX31 that the once-popular park has become a place many avoid, with some reporting being approached by people trying to buy or sell fentanyl during casual visits. Although the park features new playground equipment, cameras, and signage urging residents to report suspicious activity, families have largely stayed away.
Located just behind a recreation center and across from homes, Veterans Memorial Park sits in the heart of a working-class neighborhood — one that neighbors say deserves to feel safe again. Police have responded with what they call a “zero-tolerance” approach, making four arrests and issuing multiple citations in recent weeks. Officials say they plan to continue using drones and other tools to monitor the park and send a clear message that illegal activity will not be tolerated.
